(October 12 session held at Hamilton House)

Have you ever stood in front of a painting and tried to imagine what story is being told? Did you ever want to speak to the artist, or speculate why the artist created the work? Writing inspired by works of art dates back to Homer’s description of the Shield of Achilles in The Iliad. W. H. Auden, John Keats, John Updike and Anne Sexton are just a handful of poets who have written poems about art. This type of writing is known as “ekphrastic” writing or writing about art.

In this six-week class, we will once again work alongside with School One students and study many well-known paintings and the poems they have inspired. We will also have two visits to the RISD Museum. The first time, we will each identify a work of art that will be the springboard for a short piece of writing and the second time, we will share our own writing. You need not feel proficient in creative writing or art appreciation; you simply should be intrigued by the relationship between the written word and art.
