SCRAPBOOK - A HISTORY PROJECT

"The variety and thoughtful display techniques made it a marvelous trip down memory lane”.
That is just one of the wonderful quotes from the guest book that describes, SCRAP BOOK, Rhode Island History Exhibit. The exhibit, which was on display last June at Hamilton House and will be on display again this October, was funded by the RI Council for the Humanities.
The display is a visually impressive collection of narratives, collage, photos, paintings, memorabilia, newspaper articles and vintage clothing depicting life from the late 1800's through the 1950's, with an emphasis on WWII.
This multi-media display has been a great way to bring the community together. It has given the senior participants of Hamilton House the chance to reminisce about their past and to share their stories with the public, both young and old. Many of the members searched their attics for boxes of photos and scrap books that haven’t been touched in 50 years. They truly are the "Greatest Generation."
The exhibit will be used as an educational tool to give recognition to this older generation, which made a difference in Rhode Island. These are the people who fought for our country. They built our parks, roadways, bridges and buildings, which we know as Rhode Island. Most importantly, the purpose is to bring both young and old together to gain a deeper respect and understanding of each other.
In the month of October, students from area schools will be visiting Hamilton House to view the exhibit and get a glimpse of the past, from rationing coupons of WWII, to a women’s glove collection, to a rotary dial telephone. This mini-museum of memories will be on display at Hamilton House, from October 3 rd through October 26 th. The Opening Reception will be held from 6-8:00pm on Thursday October 4 th.
